Edward "Ed" George Wenthe

 

Edward "Ed" George Wenthe died Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Ossian Senior Hospice.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Stavanger Lutheran Church in rural Ossian, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officating. Burial followed in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery.

S.K. Rogers Funeral Home in West Union assisted the family.

Ed was born on January 16, 1930 to William and Anna (Dieterich) Wenthe in Sumner. Ed attended Hawkeye High School and graduated in 1948.

He was united in marriage to his "sweetheart" Arlene Matt on Nov. 11, 1949, at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. The couple moved to a farm in rural Ossian. Edward loved farming and took great pride in caring for his land and livestock. When he retired from milking, woodworking became his leisure activity and he built several kitchen cupboards and pieces of furniture for his home and the homes of his family and friends.

Ed believed, "Giving of yourself is your greatest gift". He lived those words everyday through his volunteer work and philanthropy. Ed was an active member of Stavanger Lutheran Church, was a board member of the Lutheran Credit Union, served as a Trustee for the Tri-County Fire Department, and was a board member for Habitat for Humanity. Throughout his life he was known for his hard work, sense of humor, devotion to his wife, and his love for his family. He will be remembered for being a man of strong convictions and steadfast faith. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Ed is survived by his wife of 64 years, Arlene of Ossian; children, Dennis (Wanda) Wenthe of Fennimore, Wis., Gloria (Trevor) Overton of Cedar Rapids, Terry (Sue) Wenthe of Ionia, Betty (Jeff) Koch of Ossian, Melody (John) Patrick of Eldorado; grandchildren, Matt (Jill) Wenthe, Dawn (Dan) Duellman, Scott Wenthe, Shelly Wenthe, Joy (Nate Dailey) Wenthe, Erin (DJ) Fleege, Hannah Overton, Lauren Overton, Danielle Overton, Neil Wenthe, Cindy Wenthe, Joe (Melissa) Wenthe, Ben Wenthe, Jessica Koch, Jackie (Dan) Brus, Christina (Jake Bruess) Patrick; great-grandchildren, Davis Wenthe, Quinn Wenthe, Bryce Dailey, Piper Fleege, Issac Wenthe, Aubrey Wenthe, Kaylie Bruess, Franklin Bruess; and; two sisters, Hilda Oelrich and Alice Wentland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Dale Wenthe, Lyndon Wenthe and David Wenthe; grandchildren, Paul Wenthe, Joanne Overton and Thomas Patrick; and five siblings.
