James "Jim" Haines

 

 

James "Jim" Alfred Haines, 86, of West Union, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Inurnment followed in Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye, Iowa.

A public visitation was held from 4 pm until 7 pm on Friday, August 8, 2014 at the Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union.

Jim was born on January 25, 1928 in Elm Creek, Manitoba, Canada to Alfred and Nellie (Bradley) Haines. In 1936 the family moved back to Iowa, living in Waucoma, Alpha and West Union.

Jim proudly served our country in the United States Navy from 1946 until 1948.

He was united in marriage to Gloria Grimm on August 23, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Two children were born to this union.

They loved to go dancing to swing music and traveling on bus tours.

Jim worked as the custodian for First National Bank, now Bank 1st, in West Union for many years. Prior to his job at the bank, he worked for Kleen-Maid Bread Company as a truck driver and drove bus and was a custodian for the West Union and North Fayette Co. Comm. Schools.

He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Post 15, both of West Union.

Jim enjoyed watching basketball and playing keyboard at area nursing homes and parties.

Jim is survived by his two children, Mark Haines of West Union and Marsha Weidemann of Glendale Heights, Illinois; three grandchildren, Corey (Nancy) McBride, Jamie Weidemann, and Zachary (Heather) Weidemann; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Davis and Letha Haines both of Cedar Rapids; and two nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria and parents.
