Phyllis Irene (Kimber) Martin was born on August 15, 1931 at home in Orleans Township, Winneshiek County, IA to William Kimber and Sylvia “Nettie” (Falck) Kimber. She was named after her grandfathers, Philip Falck and Ira Kimber.

Phyllis was baptized on November 1, 1931 at Burr Oak Lutheran Church. She was confirmed on November 25, 1945 at Decorah Lutheran Church.

She graduated in 1949 from Decorah High School and attended Luther College.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Holt Dairy in Decorah.

On October 10, 1953 Phyllis married Robert Martin in a Lutheran church near Winona, Minnesota. Phyllis and Robert had four daughters: Bonnie, Pamela, Patricia and Kristi.

Phyllis was an excellent homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with family. Her greatest joy was attending her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s musical programs and sports events. She loved any time she could spend with family at birthday parties, reunions and other outings.

Phyllis died on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Robert, a brother Merlin Kimber, and a sister Vivian Broghammer.

Those left to cherish her memory are her stepchildren: Linda (Duane) Mork, Donald (Rita) Martin, David (Linda) Martin, Reid (Sandy) Martin, Douglas (Linda) Martin, Mary (Wayne) Artman and her children: Bonnie (Kent) Halverson, Pamela (James) Longtine, Patricia (Ronald Paine) Martin and Kristi (Kent) Payne, her sister, Joanne Roney; brother-in-law, Darold Martin; twenty-two grandchildren; forty-nine great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to: NFV Performing Arts Center, 600 N. Pine St., West Union or West Union Rec Foundation, PO Box 233, West Union, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union with Rev. Nancy Larson officiating.

Burial will follow in Burr Oak Cemetery, rural Decorah, Iowa.

A public visitation was scheduled from 4 pm until 8 pm on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa.
