Devil VB exciting in loss

The gym was hot and humid, but fans who that failed to attend the first volleyball game of the season Thursday in Elkader missed a whale of an exciting match.

The host Warriors won, 3-0, but the Devils were in position to win late in all three games that ended in scores of 20-25.

In game one, the Blue Devils rallied from a 10-5 deficit to a 13-10 advantage behind the power serve of Faith Stickfort.

The Warriors came back to tie the score at 18-18. Then, the teams traded points through 20-20 before Central went on a 5-0 run to close out the game.

Game two was much the same story as the teams traded runs. C/E led, 21-17, when the Devils put on a run of their own to close the gap to 21-20. However, the home team’s experience showed up again as Central closed the game on a 4-0 run.

The final game was a mirror image of the first two as the teams traded leads. WC held a 20-19 lead late in the game, but Elkader had one more run, closing the night out on a 6-0 run.

Afterwards head coach Jessica Snyder said, “The girls did very well for their first game, especially for such a young team that is still learning.

“As a coach, I felt that the girls did a very good job on staying away from free balls and would down ball it over instead of giving a free ball whenever they could.

“They all took initiative and played very hard, and I am excited to see how this team will do in our future games.”

Due to the early Labor Day deadline, complete statistics were not available at press time.
