Robert (REM) Margroff, 85, of Elgin, Iowa, died Monday, May 25, 2015 at the Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Robert had been in ill health during recent years.

He was born March 5, 1930, on the Margroff farm, son of Ervien and Lulu (Timmons) Margroff.

He graduated from West Union High School in 1948.

Robert was trained as a linotype operator in Charles City, Iowa. He set type for the Harlan, Iowa newspaper before returning to the farm upon the death of his father. There, Robert pursued his passion for writing science fiction fantasy books. He later co-authored with Piers Anthony of Florida, several books including the Dragon’s Gold series.

Robert is survived by his Ash family, nieces, Carolyn (Rodney) Hatle of Owatonna, Minnesota, Marlene (Ron) Baker of Kellogg, Iowa, Sharon (Ken) Hoover and Nancy Duff, both of LeGrand, Iowa and nephew, Richard (Patricia) Ash of San Francisco, California, as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews, and by his neighbor, Richard Jensen.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lionel and Dallas; one sister, Melva Margroff Ash and brother-in-law, Alfred Ash.

Visitation was Wednesday, June 3, 2015 from 11 am to 1 pm at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Home Cremation Service, Clermont, Iowa.

No services were held.
