Shirley Jane (McIntyre) Smith, 99, formerly of West Union, Iowa, died on Friday, August 12, 2016, at the Iowa Masonic Health Facilities in Betendorf, Iowa.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 am, Monday, August 15, 2016, at the United Methodist Church, West Union, Iowa.

Burial followed at the West Union Cemetery.

Visitation was held one hour before the service, at 10:00 am, Monday, August 15, 2016, at the United Methodist Church.

Shirley Jane (McIntyre) Smith, daughter of William R. and Agnes Ann (Sellers) McIntyre, was born September 18, 1916, north of Hawkeye, Fayette Co., Iowa.

She attended school in Donnan, a country school (Windsor #3) near Hawkeye and West Union High School.

Shirley then worked several years at the old hospital, now the Fayette Co. Historical Center and Museum, with her sisters, Lucille and Jeanette, before getting married.

Shirley was united in marriage with Carl Edward Smith, on May 28, 1939, at the home of her parents, north of Hawkeye. To this union, five sons (Jerry, Don, Dennis, Steven, & Kevin) and one daughter (Judy) were born.

Shirley was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister, and dear friend. She was a stayathome mother, raising her children in rural Fayette County.

After moving to West Union in 1971, Shirley worked at the West Union hospital in the housekeeping section. She retired in 1986.

At their home at 410 W. Elm in West Union, Shirley and Carl thoroughly enjoyed sitting on their porch visiting with family, friends and neighbors. She dearly loved her grandchildren and was so proud of their accomplishments.

Shirley looked at the positive side of almost everything. The losses of three of her children were very difficult times, but through her faith, family and dedication to her surviving children, she remained a gentle person, who savored her life and others. Her smile, tenderness and positive outlook were her most notable attributes.

Shirley was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in West Union and the United Methodist Women's Circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Carl, who died April 9, 1995; two sons, Don and Steven; one daughter, Judy; one grandson, Evan Carl Smith; one brother, Newell McIntyre; and her three sisters, Jeanette Saboe, Lucille Reeder, and Adaline Westendorf (and their husbands Marvin Saboe, Oscar Reeder, and Gerald Westendorf).

Shirley is survived by three children, Jerry (Betty) Smith of Dubuque, Dennis (Jane) Smith of Ames, Kevin (Kristin) Smith of Bettendorf; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her sisterin-law, Verla McIntyre of Fayette; daughter-in-law, Arlene Smith of Wisconsin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Shirley's name to the United Methodist Church of West Union, the Iowa Masonic Health Facilities, or Genesis Hospice.

S.K. Rogers and Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements. 33u33
