Mary Richmond

Mary Richmond, 89, of Hawkeye, Iowa, died Thursday, January 3, 2019, at the Buchanan County Hospital, Independence, Iowa.

Mary was born December 21, 1929 at Hawkeye to Frank J.A. and Alona (Korupp) Huber.  She graduated from Hawkeye High School, Mount Mercy Junior College, Upper Iowa University, and the University of Iowa with a Master of Arts degree in Music.

She taught at Bethel (one-room school), Hawkeye, Alpha, West Union, and Chariton public schools, and was Assistant Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Upper Iowa University.

Mary met her spouse at Hawkeye, Iowa. George and Mary were married in 1949 at St. Anthony’s Smallest Church near Festina, Iowa. They lived in Hawkeye, Fayette, and Chariton communities in Iowa. After retirement, they returned to Hawkeye, Iowa.

They are parents of David (LuEllen), Jeanne (Dennis) Stannard, Michael John (deceased), Anne (Glen Custard), and Steven (deceased) (Julie).

Mary taught piano for many years and served as president of historical and genealogical societies of Fayette County and the Hawkeye Garden Club.   She was also a member of the Hawkeye Library Board.

She enjoyed gardening, researching, genealogy, and family activities, and coordinated and hosted family reunions at St Anthony’s Smallest Church.

She also enjoyed Bingo, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, watching the Minnesota Twins baseball games, and having lunch with friends and family at the local café.

In addition to two sons, she was preceded in death by her husband, George; her sister, Veronica; two grandchildren; and her parents, Frank J.A. and Alona Huber.

She is survived by three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins.

Visitation was Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 3-7 pm with a 3:00 pm Rosary and a 6:30 pm Scripture Service at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in West Union, Iowa. There was also a one hour visitation before mass at the church on Friday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, Iowa with Rev. Don Kombah as the Celebrant.

Burial will follow at Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye, Iowa.

Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of West Union, Iowa is helping the family with arrangements.
