Jon R. Mitchell, 76, of Arlington, Iowa passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, July 2, 2019 at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington with Rev. Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, 310 Main Street, Arlington, Iowa and for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment: Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington.

Memorials may be directed to the family for distribution later.

Jon Raymond Mitchell was born January 14, 1943 at Oelwein, Iowa the son of Irvin H. and Faith Bea (Boynton) Mitchell.  He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington and confirmed on June 9, 1957.  Jon attended Strawberry Point Community School graduating in 1960, where he was a member of the Future Farmers of America, serving as President his senior year.  After graduation he continued farming on the family farm southeast of Arlington.  Jon enjoyed many Mitchell family camping trips with cousins and relatives. They spent a couple weeks each winter in Florida, Texas or Arizona.  

On August 28, 1987, he was united in marriage to Virginia Lee (Kelly) Smith at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington.  They continued to live on the family farm southeast of Arlington until Jon retired on January 1, 2009.  On February 14, 2011, Jon and Virginia moved northwest of Arlington to an acreage where they built a new home.  

Jon was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington, where he served on the church council and was chairman for a term.  He was a farmer all his life and member of the Fayette County Pork Producers having served as President and a member of the Fayette County Zoning Board.  Jon and Virginia enjoyed dancing and traveling including many bus trips to different parts of the United States.

Jon is survived by his wife: Virginia Mitchell of Arlington;

2 stepchildren: Michael (Patricia) Smith of Arlington and

Corrine (Todd) Holtz of LaCrosse, Wisconsin;

4 step-grandchildren: Kyla (Justin) Koons of Latimer,

Dylan Smith of Volga and

Jacob and Jordan San Miguel of La Crosse, Wisconsin;

3 step great-grandchildren: Jenna, Jayci, and Jillyn Koons of Latimer;

2 sisters-in-law: Marian (Lorenz) Behrens of Eldridge and

Judy (Robert) Rothlisberger of West Union;

Brother-in-law: Gordon (Verla) Kelly of Maynard;

and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Gary Mitchell; parents-in-law: Cecil and Lucile Kelly; sister in-law: Marbeth Kelly; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Keith and Elaine Kelly and Geraldine Kelly.

The family would like to thank Maple Crest Manor in Fayette and St. Croix Hospice for their loving care.
