The annual Castalia Tractor Day parade is one of the most well attended parades in northeast Iowa. This year, leading the 27th annual parade celebration will be the featured 1961 Case 830 tractor owned by Arlin Franzen of rural Ossian.

“My dad (Pete) bought the tractor new in 1964 and we used it for just about everything on the farm,” explained Franzen. “We used it for custom work, chopping, planting – just about everything. It was one of our main tractors on the farm.”

Franzen, one of 13 children in his family, went on to say that he and almost all of his siblings learned to drive a tractor on this particular piece of machinery.

The Iowa Department of Transportation's Highway 18 Project from Clermont to Postville officially got underway two weeks ago with surveying and vibration monitoring taking place.

It could be awhile before we see actual paving get underway on the road, there is plenty of other work to be done in the meantime.

IDOT provided the City of Clermont with a road map of how construction of the project should play out over the summer and into the fall. According to the roadmap the project was officially slated to start on May 20 and should end by Oct. 25 barring any delays due to weather. The following is a brief summary of when certain parts of the project are slated to begin, but are always subject to change.

When it comes to knowledge of John Deere tractors and equipment, most would be hard-pressed to find someone more knowledgeable than Castalia’s Roger Monroe. That’s because Monroe just recently hung up the hat on a long 39-year career as a salesman in the industry.

“I’ve always loved being around the machinery and helping area farmers,” said Monroe, a 1967 graduate of South Winneshiek. “Working in this line is sort of like an addiction. You get wrapped up in learning all of the technology of the years and trying to know everything that there is to know.”

For Monroe, finding a job as a John Deere salesman isn’t something that he had ever planned. In fact, he spent nearly a decade farming with his father and brother after high school.

“This is the sort of thing we have always loved,” smiled Nancy Meyer of her newest business venture, Vintage on Vine in West Union.  “When this space was opening up a few months ago, the thought of coming in and starting a store crossed my mind, and I decided to take the leap!”

The shop, which sits nestled in the heart of downtown West Union offers a wide variety of gifts and décor.

“We have so many things and all are made or repurposed locally,” said Meyer.  “From furniture, trunks, wall hangings, yard décor to baked goods we will be selling in the coming weeks.  It’s all unique to the area.”

Meyer, the daughter of Pam and Steve Rogers of Sumner, is no stranger to the ‘vintage’ world as she and her mother, Pam, have long been working on projects together.
