Anytime Fitness manager/trainer Brandon Fenneman has purchased the West Union center from Josh and Nedra Blietz, who first opened the facility in August 2011.

“I feel Josh always had a lot of trust in me and I often put myself in his shoes as an owner, while I was carrying out my duties,” said Fenneman, whose parents Duane and Dawn Fenneman own a 10% stake in the venture. “Once I was in the fitness industry, it was always a goal of mine to own my own center. Since I was already working here and the opportunity came up, I took it.”

Family and friends shared a bounty of good will with longtime Elgin farmer Kim Dummermuth Saturday as the local volunteers helped harvest Dummermuth’s soybean crop, while he continues to recover from a heart transplant in August.

Dummermuth went to be seen by his family physician Monday, July 17, and after undergoing an EKG, he was told he was having a heart attack. Soon after being airlifted to Gundersen in La Crosse, he went into surgery and had multiple stents placed. The surgery went well, but when coming out of the procedure, the 68-year-old suffered an additional heart attack and coded.

Have you noticed the beautiful hanging baskets that adorn Main Street in Ossian? They don't stay beautiful by themselves, and Mother Nature certainly didn't offer any help this summer. Behind the regular watering of these flowerpots are many dedicated volunteers who tended to the pots once per day, sometimes even more.

The following local businesses and individuals worked throughout the summer to fill the watering schedule. Those businesses and individuals included:

The Iowa territory was created in 1839 as pioneers moved into newly settled farmlands. With the influx of new families, it became important to the early settlers to establish school districts for their children.

Statehood was established in 1849 and at the same time the first country school was opened at Wilcox Settlement in Fayette. In 1853 the first school in the Fayette valley was a log structure, located west of the old high school grounds. For over 100 years country schools flourished in Iowa and, specifically, in Fayette County.

Having seen a need to preserve this rich history of Fayette County’s educational system, researchers and volunteers at the Fayette County Historical Center, Meg Moellering and Lynell Wheeler, began working on the Fayette Country School Project this past summer.
