After nearly a year of campaigning and over 11,890 votes being cast, a recount could be possible for the Iowa House District 55 seat. After each of the 27 precincts reported results from the Tuesday, Nov. 4, general election, the unofficial tally has Darrel Branhagen winning by a mere 31-point margin over Rick Edwards.

Due to the Veterans Day holiday, the results of the canvassing of ballots conducted by the Fayette County and Winneshiek County Supervisors on Monday will not be completed by The Union’s early press time.

Meanwhile, the canvassing of Clayton County ballots cast for the two Decorah candidates is to be completed Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Linda Adams of Arlington started her career working in the with the area’s small public libraries in 1983 when she took on the position of assistant librarian at Arlington Public Library. Just four short years later in 1987, Adams completed her library certification and took on the director position.

In 1988, the enthusiastic librarian heard that Fayette was searching for a new director. The Arlington native saw this as an opportunity to spread her wings. She approached the boards to offer shared directorship over the two libraries and was taken up on her offer. For the last 26 years the dedicated librarian has fulfilled this duty, becoming a familiar face along the way.

Quillin's to host Grand Reopening

The staff of Quillin’s Foods invites the public to help celebrate the Grand Reopening of its West Union store today (Wednesday) through Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Longtime store manager Jim Corkery noted last week that although the names have changed over the years, the local staff has continued to provide the same great service and same hometown pride.

Recent renovations to the local grocer include new produce and fresh meat coolers and a cart storage area. Plans for the near future include moving the courtesy counter to provide even better customer convenience.

Quillin’s Foods officially assumed ownership of Moore’s Foods in West Union in January 2014. The official acquisition also included the purchase of former Moore’s Foods locations in Elgin, Monona, Postville, and Lansing.

In 2010 the First Baptist Church of Elgin began seriously discussing the idea of bidding on some property west of Elgin that was scheduled to be auctioned off in February. The church had been discussing the possibility of purchasing property in order to increase available ministry space for some time. The congregation voted to put in a bid and it was a successful one. The church closed on the property by the end of March that year. The journey toward establishing a new place for First Baptist to worship and conduct its ministries had begun. The groundbreaking that occurred on Sunday, Nov. 2, signified a first step in the actual building process.

Teachers and administrators from South Winneshiek Community Schools have been working together on a grant application that will allow for the incorporation of the Teacher Leadership Compensation (TLC) program.

The TLC system rewards effective teachers with leadership opportunities and higher pay, which, in turn, attracts promising new teachers by offering competitive starting salaries and more support.

The program is based on the idea that improving student learning requires the instruction they receive every day to be improved. South Winn believes that there is no better way to do this than to empower its best teachers to lead the effort.

Combining passion with academics is not easy to do. However, on those rare occasions when it does occur, the results are usually worthwhile for everyone involved. That seems to be the direction in which Keely Krambeer and Zaida Moore are headed. Their passion is fashion, and they are working hard to put together a fashion show as part of a WIN (What I Need) Extension class project.

The WIN class challenges students to go beyond regular classroom expectations and explore deeper concepts. It is providing these girls an opportunity to stretch their learning in a practical way that has a direct tie to something in which they have a strong interest.

Two of the 10 athletes that make up Upper Iowa University's women's tennis team this year have come to Fayette from Ukraine.

A mini United Nations, the squad also includes young women from Israel, Netherlands, and Japan.

Freshmen Yuliya Prokopshyn and Ganna Okolot are thrilled to be enrolled at UIU this year on tennis scholarships. Although they didn't know one another before, the girls have the common thread of speaking Ukrainian (Ganna also speaks Russian) and being part of a squad that treats one another like family, they say.

Yuliya, or "Julia" as she is known on campus, comes to Iowa from Lviv, Ukraine, a very historic community just an hour from the country's west border with Poland. Her father is a lawyer. Julia is studying public administration at UIU and has a minor in pre-law. She intends to continue her education to earn a master's degree in the U.S., as well.
