Motivational speaker at the PAC Friday, Nov. 4

Husband, father, athlete, double amputee and motivational speaker Kacey McCallister will bring his “RISE UP” tour to the Performing Arts Center at the North Fayette Valley High School in West Union Friday, Nov. 4. The public event begins at 7 p.m.

It was a crisp winter day when six-year-old Kacey McCallister lost both of his legs, forever altering the course of his life. This unthinkable trial could have broken him, but from that day forward he chose to rise above his circumstances and learn to live without limits.

A true testament to the power of the human spirit, his book, “When Life Gets You Down, Rise Up!” demonstrates the refining power that can be found in the midst of overwhelming odds, a power available to all who will take hold of it and rise.

The 40th anniversary of the German exchange program between North Fayette Valley (NFV) High School and Überlingen Gymnasium in Germany was observed Sunday during the schools’ traditional Volksfest. The program is dedicated to celebrating this long-standing collaboration between the two schools throughout four decades.

The NFV German exchange program was the brainchild of the late Steve Story, the then North High School principal, and the late Wilhelmine Kuennen, the school’s then German teacher. Kuennen traveled to Überlingen in 1982 to build contacts and initiate the program. The first exchange would occur a year later.

Trick-or-Treating Halloween night in Ossian

Trick-or-Treating Halloween night in Ossian

Halloween is quickly approaching, which means trick-or-treating is upon us. This year’s trick-or-treating around Ossian will be on Halloween night on Monday, Oct. 31. The event will begin at 4 p.m. and last through 7 p.m.

Just down the road in Calmar, trick-or-treating will be held on the same night with the same times.

This year, families are encouraged to consider “fun” treats for Halloween, as explained by Halley Molstad, a nutrition therapist at Gundersen Health System.

In our culture, there is a tendency to use food as entertainment and to allow food to be the centerpiece of every holiday. Offering fun non-food treats and games as part of a Halloween celebration helps encourage children to find other sources of entertainment and offers a break from eating candy.
