While Americans have seen a slight bit of relief at the gas pumps over the most recent days, nationwide and statewide averages are still soaring. With a nationwide average of $4.25 per gallon (as of Sunday) and an average across the state of Iowa coming in at $3.85 per gallon (as of Monday), everyone is feeling the affects.

“This is definitely the highest prices we’ve seen in a while, if not ever,” said Casey McDermott, owner of the West Union gas station, All-Stop. “One of the biggest challenges from my end is the dramatic fluctuation in prices. Throughout the course of just a day, my price can fluctuate as much as 20 percent.”

It’s no secret that the Northeast Iowa Community College carpentry diploma program has made its mark on local construction projects, as it has provided yearly new construction projects for many years. This year, the program had a noteworthy year as it saw a record number of students enrolled.

“This has been a crazy, albeit wonderful, school year,” said Brian Ondrashek, who has taught the program since 2008. “We began the fall term with 16 lab students (those who work on the house project) and 19 students in our lecture class, which are both highs since I have been here.”

It all started in the middle of a field when Ossian’s Oliver Fosaaen was just 11-years-old.

“I was helping do some work on an old farm with my dad and seen it sitting there,” said Fosaaen, referring to a 1969 Chevrolet Corvair that helped fuel his passion for working on cars and eventually provided the spark for his fast-growing followership for his YouTube and TikTok accounts. “The car had been sitting there in that field since 1984. I didn’t know much about it, but I knew that I wanted one.”
