Mary Landas

Mary Landas 

Mary Landas passed away March 4th, 2024 at Resolute Hospital in New Braunfels, TX. Mary was born in Sabetha, KS on 6/18/1935, one of seven children of Benadict and Cordula Luckeroth.

The family moved to Oelwein, IA where Mary married Junior Landas. They had six children Linda, Randy, Gary, Brenda, Gina and Michael. In 1972 they moved to Marshalltown, IA where they lived until 1984, then moving to Spencer, IA. From there they became winter Texans and eventually full-time residents in New Braunfels, TX.

Mary really enjoyed life and had many friends and seemingly endless energy. She loved to dance and play cards. She managed the park she lived in and also volunteered at Sts Peter and Paul Thrift Store.

Mary was kind, generous, feisty and always there for her family and friends and will be missed by all who knew her.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Junior Landas and sons Michael and Gary.

Kent Russell McElvania

Kent Russell McElvania, 72, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 4, 2024. Kent was born on February 5, 1952, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He was the oldest of three children born to Patricia (Kellogg) and Glen McElvania. Kent graduated from Orange High School in Waterloo, Iowa in 1970 and Ellsworth Community College in 1973 where he met his future wife, Lois. He earned a degree from Buena Vista College and worked for them for 10 years in the Admissions Department. He joined Upper Iowa University in 1985 as Director of Admissions and after 18 years he took on a role with compliance in the Athletic Department.

Harold Robert McMillin, Jr.

Harold Robert McMillin, Jr., 78, of Guttenberg, Iowa, son of Harold Sr. and Marie (Carlson) McMillin was born March 28, 1945, in McGregor. Harold passed away unexpectedly on March 2, 2024. He faced many health challenges in his life and fought each one with resilience and courage.

Harold grew up on a dairy farm and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1963, where he was active in both 4-H and FFA, showing cattle at many local fairs. He enjoyed participating in basketball and wrestling when he could. After high school, Harold graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly and Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque.

On August 26, 1966, Harold married Eunice (Muller) McMillin in Parkersburg. They had three children, Bradley, Denise and Tim. Later, on June 30, 1991, Harold married Linda (Steele) McMillin at Elgin Lutheran Church, and they shared their lives in the Elgin and Guttenberg areas.

Wayne Monroe Holtzman, Sr.

Wayne M. Holtzman, Sr., 93, of Waterloo and formerly of Fayette, passed away on Monday evening, February 12, 2024, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Grandview Cemetery in Fayette with military rites provided by American Legion Post #339 of Fayette. Viola Bohr, age 95, of Decorah, IA, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2024, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024, at St. Benedict Catholic Church 307 West Main Street, Decorah, IA with Rev. Donald Hertges presiding. Burial will be in the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m., until the time of service at the church on Friday morning. The Helms Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Paul Wayne Humphrey

Paul Wayne Humphrey, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, AR. He was born October 4, 1934 in Spencer, Iowa. He was a 1952 graduate of Quimby High School and a 1956 graduate of Iowa State University. He was an active-duty officer in the United States Army Corp of Engineers for 25 years, serving two tours as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in Fort Smith after serving as the Post Engineer at Fort Chaffee, AR. He then began a second career, first renovating, then designing, building, and managing residential properties. Paul enjoyed playing duplicate bridge; he became a Life Master in 1987 and was an active leader at the local bridge club for over 30 years. He was a faithful supporter of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving in numerous roles.

Pat” Ann (Johnson) Hoffman 

Pat” Ann (Johnson) Hoffman (74) Lodi, CA; born Sept. 21, 1949, in Postville, IA, to Harry & Kathryn Johnson of Elgin, IA. She graduated from Valley High School (’67) and the University of Sioux Falls (’71). Because of her prolonged illness, she longed to be with Jesus and passed from this world into the open and welcoming arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Sunday, Feb. 25. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Rev. Dennis D Hoffman with four children and six grandchildren: Jonathan (Claudia – Joshua & Ayla) Hoffman, Sarah (Eric – Sean & Kaitlyn) Henneberque, Rebekah (Aubry – Kaylee & Mercedes) Oakes, & Hannah (Tim) Keller. A niece, Bobbii Jacobs, and a nephew, Bob Hach, Jr. and three grand nephews. Preceding her was an older baby brother Dwight, her parents, Harry & Kathryn (Krueger) Johnson, and sister, Marjorie Hach.

Oliver Hewitt Larson

Oliver Hewitt Larson, 96 of Elgin, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at Good Samaritan Home in West Union, Iowa where he had lived for six months.  He was born to Elmer H. and Amelia P. (Thorson) Larson on August 13, 1927 at the family home east of Elgin.  He was baptized and confirmed at East Clermont Lutheran Church and attended country school until 8th grade and graduated from Elgin High School in 1944.  He attended Luther College for one year.

Oliver married Darlene Olson on August 26, 1950 at East Clermont Lutheran Church where they were members their entire lives and where he served in many leadership roles over the years.  They farmed together until he retired in 1992.  Oliver and Darlene travelled together visiting most the states and state capitals, including a driving trip through Alaska.  They also visited several European countries.

Marsha Kaye (Frey) Leahy

Marsha Kaye (Frey) Leahy, 73, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at the Five Roses Adult Care Home in Glendale, Arizona with her husband by her side. Marsha was born December 6, 1950, the oldest of three children, to John and Colleen (Leete) Frey in Oelwein, IA.  She received her education at Fayette High School graduating in the class of 1969. She then attended Humboldt Institute in Minneapolis, MN and graduated with an Associates Degree in Travel and Tourism. She then worked for the Fred R. Wilson Corporation in Minneapolis until 1974.

Kenneth Dean Weston

Kenneth Dean Weston

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr. Kenneth Dean Weston. Ken went to heaven on February 20, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa surrounded by family. Ken was an amazing husband, father, grandpa, brother, friend, and veterinarian whose clients appreciated his gentle and skilled care of their animals. 

Ken was born on October 14, 1944, to Jean (Zuercher) and Raymond Weston. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1962. After being introduced through his brother Russ, he married Diane Burrett on August 6, 1966, at St. John Lutheran Church in Arlington, Iowa. In 1968, Ken obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University. After moving to Brillion, Wisconsin, Ken and Diane joined Trinity Lutheran Church. Upon moving to northeast Iowa, they worshipped and served at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church.
