Carol Stahr

Carol Stahr, 81, of West Union, Iowa died Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at her home in West Union. She was born February 3, 1942 to Alfred and Olivia (Roelike) Winter in Postville, Iowa. She graduated from Postville High School, Postville, Iowa in 1959.

Carol was united in marriage with Allen Scott Stahr on October 14, 1961 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville, Iowa. Four children were born to this union, Timothy, Julie, Eric and Catherine. Carol was a reporter for the Fayette County Union Newspaper, West Union, Iowa for almost twenty years. She was a very active member of Holy Name Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America. Carol was an avid bowler, participating in Nationals for over twenty-five years. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing trivial pursuit and skit and also belonging to a card club.

Frieda Mihm, age 96, of St. Lucas, IA, died Monday, June 19, 2023, at MercyOne New Hampton Medical Center. 

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, IA with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass.  Interment will follow at the church cemetery with Tim Bakula, Scott Bakula, Kurt Bakula, Chris Mihm, Drew Pietan, Haley Resewehr serving as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers will be Heidi Rewerts, Tina Pietan, Amy Pietan, Kari Pietan,, Leslie Noehl, Danielle Luchsinger and Jackie Smith.

Friends greeted the family from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2023, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas.  Visitation continued an hour before the Mass on Tuesday at the church.

Paul Garry Bement was born August 9, 1950 to Paul and Paula Bement of West Union, IA. He graduated from North High in West Union in 1968. On June 26, 1970 he was joined in marriage to Tina Rae Berken of Waterloo, IA. They lived happily in Auburn together for almost 53 years, in “a shack by the river” as Paul used to say. Many folks knew him by his nickname “Grizz”.  He was also known by the vehicles he drove, decorated with humorous quotes and Bible verses.  

Paul spent most of his life as a truck driver, a job he absolutely loved.  Paul was a very talented mechanic too and could fix almost anything.  Paul also spent many years riding a bicycle all over NE Iowa, as well as commuting to work on his bike. He also enjoyed tinkering, chatting with folks, and just hanging out with his family.

Evelyn M. “Evie” Hurst, 84, of Elgin, Iowa passed away Friday, June 16, 2023 at her home in Elgin. She was born in rural Winneshiek County to Charles and Mathilda “Tilly” (Milota) Crowe. After attending Cresco Elementary, and graduating from Assumption High School, she was employed by Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Later she was married to Frank Hurst, and they were operators of a large grain and custom work farm operation for 13 years. During this time they became the parents of two children, Julie and Chase. 

During her life she was employed as a medical assistant at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, an accountant for Hanson Engineering, West Union, a writer for the Elgin Echo, and a floral designer both in Clermont and Postville. Evie enjoyed being a 4-H leader, gardening, and also did many projects of fine art, both for herself and many customers. But most of all, she enjoyed her family and especially all her grandsons.

Leon Joseph Dietzenbach, 74, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023 at his home in Palm Bay, FL surrounded by family and continued on to his next great adventure. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 23, 2023, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 22 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas and for one-hour preceding Mass at the Church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hawkeye First Responders or to the St. Lucas Historical Society.

Sharon Ann Morse, 78, of West Paducah, Kentucky formerly of Osage Beach, Missouri passed away on June 6, 2023 at her home. She was born on August 19, 1944 in Dakota City, Iowa to John and Christine Pick. She was a graduate of Corpus Christi High School, Galesburg, Illinois and The Business College of Davenport, Iowa.

Sharon had a deep love of the outdoors: fishing, hunting, and gardening. This love of all things outdoors gave her a great passion for animals; her horses and various animals on the farm as well as breeding and grooming dogs, mainly schnauzers as additional income was always appreciated on the farm. She was also an excellent seamstress with an avid appreciation of the arts. She had recently retired from her business venture in Osage Beach, Missouri.

Todd Gefaller, a North Fayette graduate, 57, passed away at the University Hospital, Iowa City, after a long illness.

  He is survived by his parents, Holly and Dewayne Gefaller ,of Hawkeye, a brother, Trent (Jenny) Gefaller of Oelwein and two nieces, Savannah Schaubroeck  (Justin) and Sydney of Oelwein. No services were held.

Janet "Jan" Sheridan age 78 of New Hampton, formerly of Lawler, IA, died Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Unity Point Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, IA.

Janet "Jan" Sheridan, a loving mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2023, in Waterloo, IA. Born on March 15, 1945, in Wellman, IA, the daughter of Clois and Eathyle (Groff) Ellis. Jan was known for her creativity, intelligence, and passion in everything she did.
