     Verna Anna Medberry, 96, of West Union, Iowa, formerly of Volga and Elgin, Iowa passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2019, due to natural causes. Verna was born October 1, 1923, the daughter of Henry W. and Sabina Gross at her family’s Eldorado, Iowa farm home.  She attended Dover Number 2 School in Eldorado until she entered West Union High School.  She continued her post-secondary education at Cedar Rapids Business College and upon graduation 1942 was employed at 1st National Bank, West Union, Iowa until her marriage to Glen Medberry August 14, 1949.  They farmed north of Volga, Iowa until retiring to Elgin, Iowa.  Glen passed away Feb. 10, 2014.  Verna resided at Stoney Brook Village, West Union, Iowa the past five years.

Lawrence LaVerne Schneider, 72, of West Union, Iowa died Saturday, December 7, 2019 at his home in West Union, Iowa.  Lawrence was born November 10, 1947 to LaVerne and LaVilia (Learn) Schneider in Postville, Iowa.

Lawrence was united in marriage with Marie Sauerbrei on September 23, 1972. Throughout the years, Lawrence worked at Dessel’s Furniture and retired from Agri Processors. He was a member of Experiment Aircraft Association and was building an ultralight. He enjoyed doing wood carving, attending weekly carving meetings in Monona and having coffee with friends at various places.

Larry David Scott, 79, died Friday, November 29th in Sierra Vista, AZ.

Larry was born December 24 1939 in West Union, Iowa, the son of J. Donald and Clara Scott.  Larry attended the University of Iowa, playing clarinet in the Hawkeye Marching Band and earning a degree in business administration.  After graduation, Larry moved to Chicago where he worked in medical sales and later relocated to Arizona, working as an accountant for the City of Phoenix.  Larry was an avid bridge player and appreciated the beautiful desert landscape of Arizona.  He enjoyed returning to Iowa each summer to see friends and family, visit the West Union area, and have dinner at the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana, always calling ahead to request a slice of rhubarb meringue pie.

Leslie Richard Guyer, 75, of Elgin, Iowa died Monday, December 9, 2019 at his home in rural Elgin, Iowa.  Leslie was born on March 20, 1944 to Victor Millard and Jennie Caroline (Wolfs) Guyer in Postville, Iowa. He was baptized on May 7, 1944 and confirmed on October 15, 1959. Leslie grew up on the family farm south of Clermont, Iowa. He attended country school through the 4th grade, and later attended Valley of Elgin, where he graduated in 1962. Leslie was drafted into the United States Army on April of 1965, on a two-year tour spending one year in Vietnam. He was very proud to serve his country.

Alan John Steinlage age 73 of Ionia, IA passed on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, at the Iowa City VA Health Care System surrounded by family and friends.

Alan John was born February 25, 1946, to Al and Anne (Neusch) Steinlage in West Union, IA the third of eight children - seven beloved boys and the youngest a girl being Alan's favorite sister. 

Alan grew up on the family dairy farm just south of St. Lucas, IA. where he learned the value of hard work, love of family and began to develop his great faith.

Robert G. “Bob” Hackett, 85, of Salem, IA, passed away Monday, December 2, 2019, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.

Family greeted friends Sunday, December 8, 2019, from 2–4 p.m. at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel. A Memorial Service was held Monday, December 9, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Faith Christian Outreach Church with Pastor Gary Van Nyhuis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Born April 29, 1934, in Fayette, IA, Robert Gordon was the son of Gordon Rile and Bernice (Older) Hackett.  He was a graduate of Fayette High School.  On January 28, 1956, Bob married Fran Irene Erue in Fayette, IA.

George H. Gerstenberger, 86, of Hazleton, Iowa died Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at the home of his son in Holt, Missouri.

Funeral Service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 18, 2019 at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein with Deacon Jim Patera officiating.

Visitation was from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and for one hour before the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Rosary was at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Hazleton, Iowa.

Graveside Military Honors by the Iowa National Guard were held.

Leon “Lee” A. Hansmeier, 75, of Waukon, IA, died Sunday, December 8, 2019, at his home. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 14th, at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion with visitation from 12 to 3:30 P.M., followed by a prayer service, time for sharing memories of Lee, a luncheon, and music with karaoke following. Burial will take place at a later date in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements for the family.
