‘Souper Bowl’ weekend fast approaching

‘Souper Bowl’ weekend fast approaching 

      North Fayette Valley-Area Cub Scout Pack 54 and Boy Scout Troop 54 invites the community can help them score big Saturday and Sunday during a “Souper Bowl” Food Drive to benefit those in need.

      Cans of soups and pasta, flavored rice and noodle packets, and ramen noodles are just a few examples of the many items which can easily help feed area families in need. All donations from the event will help fill the shelves of the Open Hands Food Pantry in West Union.

Pianist at Fayette Opera House

      Pianist Abbie Brewer will present “Snapshots: Americana” at the Fayette Opera House in Fayette Friday. The free listen and learn event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

      A freewill donation dessert bar will be provided by the Fayette Opera House Board, Friends of Fayette Community Library, and other community members supporting the arts.  Audience members will have an opportunity to interact with the music in a different way than a formal concert.

      A teacher, pianist, travel enthusiast, collaborative artist, Brewer is praised for her thoughtful playing and confident teaching. Along with her studio and performance schedule, she is currently the Coe College Velma J. MacMillan assistant professor of music.

NAMI support group meetings

NAMI support group meetings

      The local National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) leads two monthly support groups related to mental health.

      The Connection Recovery Support Group is a support group for individuals who experience mental health conditions. The meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday at its new location in the lower level of the Decorah Lutheran Church.

      Meanwhile, the Family Support Group meets from 7-8:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of each month at the North Fayette Valley Community Coalition Youth Center, rural Elgin. The Family support group is for adult family members or loved ones of those experiencing mental health conditions.

Elgin Historical Society meeting

      The Elgin Historical Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Museum Building on Center Street in Elgin.  This will be the first meeting of 2024 and kicks off a busy year with museum renovations for the Tribes of the Turkey River Native American Cultural Center, along with plans for Elgin Homecoming 2024.   

      The public is welcome to attend as a member or visitor. The program topic is “Bring your antique or favorite Valentines to share.”

      After serving his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy, Michael Erickson felt a call to serve God. Saturday, he was ordained and installed as pastor of West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont. The service was led by Bishop Kevin Jones of the Northeastern Iowa Synod.

      It took dedication and commitment for Erickson to achieve his goal and was the culmination of a long journey through COVID-19-challenging times.

'The Chosen' at Zion Thursday

'The Chosen' at Zion Thursday

      Zion Lutheran Church in West Union will begin showing season one of “The Chosen” Thursday.

      The Feb. 8 event will include a soup supper beginning at 5:30 p.m. Cost is a freewill donation. Subsequent episodes of the television series will follow at 6 p.m. each Thursday in the church fellowship hall. The public is welcome to attend.
