The Warrior boys’ basketball team notched win number five on the season last week as South Winn downed the West Central Blue Devils, 58-32.

“This game was certainly not our best performance and something that we need to learn from in the early stages of the season,” said coach Blake Moen about his team’s performance. “We did not come out with the same intensity in the first half that we have in most of our games and it showed on the floor.”

The North Fayette Valley girls’ basketball team played like it was shot out of a cannon on Tuesday night (Dec. 17) as it exploded for a 48-2 lead at halftime and went on to win, 67-17.

“It was a fantastic first half to start the game,” said coach Jim Calkins after the win, which improved the team to 4-2 on the season. “The girls looked to push and find the open girl. It became contagious!”

The TigerHawk boys’ basketball team fell to a tough Postville squad, 52-44, on Tuesday. The loss dropped the team to 2-3 on the season and 2-2 in Upper Iowa Conference play.

Postville held a narrow one-point lead at the half, but the Pirates proved to be too much in the second half as they pulled away in the third and fourth quarters.

North Fayette Valley hosted a triangular in West Union on Tuesday, Dec. 17, as Maquoketa Valley and New Hampton/Turkey Valley came to town.

In dual number one of the evening, the TigerHawks earned a dominating 69-3 win over Maquoketa Valley. The effort was highlighted by four TigerHawk wins that came via fall as Levi Lauer (132), Joel Grimes (145), Alex Streif (160), and Kale Rodgers (182) each pinned their opponents. At 220 pounds, Isaiah Corbin earned a 4-0 decision over Devin Smith.

The South Winneshiek wrestling team officially began the dual portion of its schedule last week as the Warriors traveled to Oelwein for a quad against the Huskies, Charles City, and East Buchanan. 

South Winn started the action against Charles City where the Comets were able to down SW, 44-30. The Warriors were able to win six matches in the dual, despite forfeiting two weight classes (113 and 285).

The Warriors rebounded with a 54-26 win over East Buchanan and then knocked off Oelwein, 42-27.

The South Winneshiek girls’ basketball team had a rough week, dropping all three of its games. The Warriors are now 0-6 on the season after losses to North Fayette Valley, Clayton Ridge, and Denver.

The TigerHawks used a stellar opening quarter to build a big lead over the Warriors and then never look back on the way to a 57-21 win over South Winn.

The Warrior girls were able to outscore NFV in the final quarter, 8-6.

Senior Liz Tieskoetter led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds.

The TigerHawk boys’ basketball team split its two Upper Iowa Conference games last week, falling to a strong South Winneshiek team on Tuesday night (Dec. 10) and then rebounding with a big win over West Central on Friday.

“We got off to a good start in the first quarter,” said coach Matt Krambeer of his team’s performance on Friday evening in Calmar. “We just struggled to score after that. Part of it was due to South Winn being active and solid defensively and part of that was due to our inability to work for better shots.”

The TigerHawk girls’ basketball team notched a pair of Upper Iowa Conference wins last week to improve to 3-2 on the season and 3-1 in UIC play.

South Winn

NFV began the week Tuesday, Dec. 10, on the road against South Winneshiek.

The TigerHawks jumped on the Warriors early, grabbing a commanding 22-4 lead after the first eight minutes.

In the second quarter, South Winn was able to slow down NFV slightly, but the TH girls still managed to extend their lead to 32-11 at the half.

North Fayette Valley hosted Charles City at Lilac Lanes on Friday afternoon as both the boys’ and girls’ bowling teams were in action.

The TigerHawk boys were defeated by a talented CC team by a score of 2.876-2,104. NFV was led by Mason Brown-Gonnerman who bowled a 332 (160 and 172). Brice Burgin also hit the 300 mark, carding a 319 (125 and 194).
