Total team effort in 39-14 win

NFV compiled 475 yards of offense in Friday’s 39-14 win over Union. The big reason is the big boys up front. Here, Stryker Long (74) takes care of one Knight while Wyatt Streif (70) stops Union’s 335-pound nose tackle in his tracks. (Jerry Wadian photo)

NFV earned its first victory of the season, 39-14, over Union on Friday in LaPorte City. The TigerHawks controlled the action, earning new head coach Justin Heins his first W as a varsity coach,

“It was very much a total team effort,” stated Heins at the Coach’s Roundtable Saturday morning at Bank 1st

The offense ground out 334 yards rushing while the passing attack netted another 141 yards. Meanwhile, the defense held Union to 83 yards in the air and minus 32 yards on the ground, which meant the Knights were held to 51 yards of total offense! The South Winneshiek volleyball team got its 2019 campaign started last week, but it didn’t go quite as hoped.

“We lost nearly an entire roster from last year and have been working to find the right fit for everyone on the court in a way that best fits our needs as a team,” said coach Glenna Munuswamy after losing to both Dunkerton and Hudson on Thursday. “While the scores don’t show a successful night, there were many great things that we saw and also things we could identify as areas that need work.”

The South Winn football team kicked off its 2019 season on Friday night as the Warriors took on the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs on the road. The game started well for South Winn, but the Bulldogs answered in a big way as the Warriors fell, 44-28.

“We came out with a balanced offensive attack that played well enough to win the game,” said coach Jason Ohrt after the tough loss. “Defensively, we struggled to consistently recognize MFL/s blocking schemes and there were too many missed tackles.”

The Warriors received the game opening kickoff and ensued to drive the length of the field and capitalized with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.

NFV opened the 2019 cross country season Tuesday, Aug. 27, with the Ed-Co invitational in Edgewood.

Thursday, Aug. 29, the TigerHawks competed at the Early Bird Invitational in Charles City.

The meet at Edgewood began with a bright sun, but a lone black cloud blew over the course as the JV boy’s were about 1.5 miles along in their race. Thunder and heavy rain forced the cancellation of the race.

However, the cloud passed by Edgewood in a relative hurry and the varsity races were able to take place.

The boy’s finished fourth in the eight-team field; there were also two other schools without enough runners for a full team. South Winn, Jesup and Starmont were the three schools ahead of NFV.

After Friday’s opening football game against Waverly-Shell Rock, new head football coach Justin Heins said, “I just wanted to see the team compete!  And, I think we did.  Our first goal was to get to half time in good position because the last couple years we didn’t play well early on and they were able to pull away.”

The TigerHawks were indeed competitive taking a 7-0 lead at the halftime break.

However, the game got away from NFV in the second half as WSR used its mammoth front line to run to an 18-7 win.

The first twelve minutes were consumed by three drives, none of which resulted in a score.

The TigerHawks opened the game on its own 22 and took it to the bigger Go-Hawks using 15 plays to drive to the WSR 18, before stopping themselves with penalties.

Waverly used six plays to drive into NFV territory, but Zach Robrock recovered a Go-Hawk fumble on the 28.

Once again, the TigerHawks controlled the game, driving into Go-Hawk territory but turned the ball over on downs thanks to back-to-back penalties.

The visitors then went three-and-out and a high snap, coupled with pressure by Kole Johnson forced the Go-Hawk punter into shanking the ball and NFV got possession on its own 46.

This time the TigerHawks would not be denied as it ran a 13-play drive to the house for a 7-0 lead.

The NFV cross country team will kick off the 2019-2020 sports season at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27 in Edgewood.

The TigerHawks will be one of 14 teams at the first big meet of the season. Among the teams attending are UIC foes Central/Elkader, Kee, Postville, South Winn, and Turkey Valley.

Last year both the NFV boy’s varsity and JV teams finished second. The varsity lost to SW by a mere eight points and the JV to C/E by only two points.

The girl’s, led by Brynn Gamm’s 10th-place finish, finished seventh; they did not field a JV team.

The other fall sports will be close behind the cross country opening meet.

Football will begin its season on Friday, Aug. 30 when it hosts Class 3A Waverly-Shell Rock.

The NFV football team will be on display Friday night in Delhi as the annual Sports Drink Scrimmage goes on the road to Maq. Valley.

Admission is still a bottle of any kind of sports drink that is so necessary for hydration, especially early in the season. The two teams will split the proceeds.

New NFV head coach Justin Heins said, “We’re really excited about this because it gives our young team a chance to gain experience against a team that we know nothing about. It also gives us a chance to test some new schemes as well as test some people at new positions before the season gets started.”
