The Warriors got just what the doctor ordered for them Friday night – a dominating performance and big win to get them back in the win column.

“I’m really proud of our entire program – players and coaches,” said Coach Jason Ohrt after his team’s 42-14 win over Sumner-Fredericksburg. “We had a challenging week and our kids had to face some adversity, but we came together and put together four quarters of solid football!”

The Warriors wasted no time in getting on the board as they forced the Cougars to go three-and-out on their first possession before getting the aerial attack started on offense.

The NFV volleyball team not only opened the 2019 season with a win, but it also upended defending UIC champion Central/Elkader on the Warriors home court.

The win Tuesday, Sept. 3, gives new NFV volleyball coach, Jenny Lee her first victory as a varsity coach.

Game one was a real barnburner with neither team holding more than a four-point lead. The TigerHawks had a chance to put the game away with a 26-25 lead, but the home team rallied to score the final three points of the match for a 28-26 win.

The heartbreaking loss did not break this band of TigerHawks as the team swept the remaining three games, 25-18, 25-14, and 25-18.

The South Winneshiek volleyball team got its 2019 campaign started last week, but it didn’t go quite as hoped.

“We lost nearly an entire roster from last year and have been working to find the right fit for everyone on the court in a way that best fits our needs as a team,” said coach Glenna Munuswamy after losing to both Dunkerton and Hudson on Thursday. “While the scores don’t show a successful night, there were many great things that we saw and also things we could identify as areas that need work.”

The South Winn football team kicked off its 2019 season on Friday night as the Warriors took on the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs on the road. The game started well for South Winn, but the Bulldogs answered in a big way as the Warriors fell, 44-28.

“We came out with a balanced offensive attack that played well enough to win the game,” said coach Jason Ohrt after the tough loss. “Defensively, we struggled to consistently recognize MFL/s blocking schemes and there were too many missed tackles.”

The Warriors received the game opening kickoff and ensued to drive the length of the field and capitalized with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.

NFV opened the 2019 cross country season Tuesday, Aug. 27, with the Ed-Co invitational in Edgewood.

Thursday, Aug. 29, the TigerHawks competed at the Early Bird Invitational in Charles City.

The meet at Edgewood began with a bright sun, but a lone black cloud blew over the course as the JV boy’s were about 1.5 miles along in their race. Thunder and heavy rain forced the cancellation of the race.

However, the cloud passed by Edgewood in a relative hurry and the varsity races were able to take place.

The boy’s finished fourth in the eight-team field; there were also two other schools without enough runners for a full team. South Winn, Jesup and Starmont were the three schools ahead of NFV.

NFV leads at half; loses 18-7

After Friday’s opening football game against Waverly-Shell Rock, new head football coach Justin Heins said, “I just wanted to see the team compete!  And, I think we did.  Our first goal was to get to half time in good position because the last couple years we didn’t play well early on and they were able to pull away.”

The TigerHawks were indeed competitive taking a 7-0 lead at the halftime break.

However, the game got away from NFV in the second half as WSR used its mammoth front line to run to an 18-7 win.

The first twelve minutes were consumed by three drives, none of which resulted in a score.

The TigerHawks opened the game on its own 22 and took it to the bigger Go-Hawks using 15 plays to drive to the WSR 18, before stopping themselves with penalties.

Waverly used six plays to drive into NFV territory, but Zach Robrock recovered a Go-Hawk fumble on the 28.

Once again, the TigerHawks controlled the game, driving into Go-Hawk territory but turned the ball over on downs thanks to back-to-back penalties.

The visitors then went three-and-out and a high snap, coupled with pressure by Kole Johnson forced the Go-Hawk punter into shanking the ball and NFV got possession on its own 46.

This time the TigerHawks would not be denied as it ran a 13-play drive to the house for a 7-0 lead.
