The South Winn boys’ track and field team competed at Postville Friday, posting its best results of the season.

“We did a great job tonight and everyone competed hard,” said coach Scott Conway in reference to his team’s runner-up finish with 116 points. “As a result, we scored in nearly every single event. If people didn’t have season or lifetime bests, they were their second or third best performances of the year or their lives.”

The South Winneshiek boys’ and girls’ golf teams officially teed of their season Monday, April 1, at Waukon. 

It came down to only an 11-stroke difference between the Warrior boys and the Indians of Waukon with a final of 189-178, in favor of the opposition. Senior Braden Lensing tied for runner-up honors with a round of 43.

According to head girl’s track coach Mark Nuss, “We’re still working to figure out our best lineup.”

This week the girls faced two away meets against much larger schools.

Tuesday, April 2, the gals were in Mason City.

“We had a few surprises; some were good and a few not so good,” Nuss commented.

Fantz medals twice in hurdles

Weston Fantz earned a gold and a silver medal in the 400 hurdles last week to lead the NFV boy’s track team.

The boy’s opened the week in Edgewood, where they finished fifth in the field of 15 teams. The TigerHawks amassed 66 points, a mere point behind host, Ed-Co. Bellevue won with 140 points

With so many teams in the meet and each team with some quality individuals and/or relays, medals, were hard to accumulate.

However, with points going down to eighth place in individual events the TigerHawks were able to score multiple times in many events.

Girls open track with two meets

NFV moved its first home track meet of the season last week from Friday to Thursday due to the threat of rain.

Despite only having a days rest between the Tuesday, March 26, meet in Waverly and the home-opener, the TigerHawks ran well at the finishing second to a very good Crestwood team, 178-115.

  “It was a good meet for us; we were very balanced,” commented head coach Mark Nuss.  It was good to see us earn medals in all four of the field events. It’s the first time in a while that we’ve had that   happen.”

Boys dominate home track meet

The NFV boy’s track team piled up 167 points in dominating its home meet Friday, March 29. Clayton Ridge was a distant second with 112 points.

The TigerHawks won at least one medal in every event in which they competed except three, and it won two medals in the 800.

In the field events, Lance Butikofer was a surprise. The senior just came out for track the practice before the meet, and in his first competition, won the shot and claimed a bronze medal in the discus.

Warriors compete at UIC Indoor

The South Winneshiek boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed at the Upper Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Meet on Friday afternoon at Luther College in Decorah.

The Warrior boys brought home a runner-up medal with 105 points, while the girls took fourth with 78 points.

The SW boys were led by a pair of first-place finishes including Noah Tieskoetter’s 19’5” jump in the long jump and Jaron Todd’s 9.04 time in the 55-meter hurdles.

NFV girls surprise at UIC Indoor

The NFV girl’s track team surprised some people at the UIC Indoor Track Meet Friday at Luther College in Decorah. Knowledgeable people in track circles knew the girls had some talent, but were young and without a   veteran speedster.

However, some youngsters came through, some vets stepped up and the TigerHawk gals outperformed every team but one in the UIC.

  While no official team scores are kept in the indoor season, Kee was the unofficial winner with 99 points. NFV amassed 89.5 points to edge Central/Elkader who earned 86 points; South Winn was a distant fourth with 78 points.

While no official team results are kept for indoor track meets, if you look at the unofficial points given for the events, then the NFV boy’s had a 14.5-point final advantage over South Winn and Clayton Ridge at the UIC Indoor Track Meet at Luther College in Decorah.

  The TigerHawks excelled in the relays, medaling in all four events. They won the 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800, and earned silver in the 1600 relay.

 Individually, NFV won three events, finished second in three more events, and placed third in another.
