One point heartache

NFV lost a one-point heartbreaker, 35-34, to the heavily favored Sailors of Waterloo Columbus Friday night in West Union.

It was a seesaw contest all night, but missed PATs left the TigerHawks playing catch-up.

NFV started on the wrong foot when it fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Columbus the ball on the TigerHawk 22. Four plays later, the Sailors scored to make it 7-0 with just 2:51 gone in the opening quarter.

700 runners invade WU

700 runners invade WU

After the cross country meet Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Manchester was cancelled due to the weather, officials at NFV decided to schedule a home meet. It was necessary because the runners really needed the competition, particularly with the conference meet next Thursday.

The meet had to be organized in less than 48 hours because it had to be run on Thursday. It was open to middle school, JV and varsity (with JV and varsity running together).

Initially, 10 schools were expected, with many bringing runners for only one or two events.

It seems with the record-setting rains last month and carrying over to this week, a great many schools were in the same boat (seemingly an ark) as NFV, because meet officials had to turn away 22 schools to keep the event to a manageable 12.

NFV pounded out a workman-like 24-6 victory Friday against visiting Oelwein.

After the Huskies opened the game by going three-an-out, the TigerHawks took over on the 50. It took NFV 13 plays to make the score 6-0 with 5:17 left in the first quarter. A 14-yard pass from Brooks Hovden to Mac Whelan set up a four yard TD run by Liam McIntyre.

The Warriors picked up their fourth win of the season Friday night in Calmar as they defeated the Huskies of Nashua-Plainfield, 38-16.

“We came out with a nice balanced attack on offense and were able to establish the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,” said SW coach Jason Ohrt. “Our offensive line protected our quarterbacks well all night and we were very efficient throwing the ball as Jacob Herold and Nick Holien completed over 80 percent of their passes.”

Sophomore quarterback Jacob Herold got the Warriors on the board first in the first quarter as he scrambled into the end zone on a 23-yard run to give SW a 6-0 lead.

Slow starts stop volleyball

NFV lost a pair of UIC games last week because of  slow starts.

Tuesday, Sept. 25, the TigerHawks lost to MFL/MM, 25-12, 25-19, and 25-18, in Monona.

Friday, conference-leading Central/Elkader came to West Union, walking off with a 25-15, 25-21, 19-25, and 25-18 victory.

In Monona, the Bulldogs played well. According to co-head coach Jared Tilleraas, “We got off to a slow start, and MFL/MM put us in a hole with a strong all-around game. We just didn’t respond well enough, quick enough.”
