Ehler, Lehmann to represent NFV at State

“We had a good showing,” stated NFV head girls’ track coach Mark Nuss after the State Qualifying Meet Thursday in Osage. “It was a really tough meet because there were so many good athletes competing. We placed in most events and recorded a number of season- and personal-bests.”

Weather was also a factor. It was windy but 72 degrees when the field events kicked off. By the end of the meet, it was still windy, but the temperature had fallen over 15 degrees and a light rain had been falling for a while.

Marin Ehler and Ryin Lehmann were the heroines for the TigerHawks by qualifying in two events apiece for the State Track Meet this Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.

NFV boys send seven events to State

NFV will be sending seven events to the State Track Meet this Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.

Jace Burrow will go in both the 100 dash and 110 hurdles. Cade Chapman qualified in the 200, Chandler Douglas is going in the 3200, and Jordan Baumler will compete in the discus. NFV qualified two relays, the 4x100 and 4x200.

NFV boys' golf advances

For the third consecutive year, the TigerHawk boys’ golf team advanced out of the Sectional Golf Tourney. NFV finished third and will compete at the District Tournament on Friday at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Dike.

The Sectional Meet last week was moved ahead from Friday to Thursday because of anticipated bad weather.

Host New Hampton (ranked ninth in Class 2A) won the meet with a 327. That meant three teams qualified for District. Denver was second with a 335 and NFV came in with a 354, four strokes better than Sumner-Fredericksburg. 

Colin Gavin was the hottest golfer on the course with a 37-38-75, earning medalist honors for the TigerHawk junior. For the tourney, Gavin was just 3-over, making   par on 12 of the 18 holes; he also birdied No. 6 during the opening round. The Chickasaws’ Ryan Anderson was runner-up with a 76.

The Warrior boys’ track team was in action on two occasions last week, traveling to Osage on Tuesday, April 24, and then competing at the Crestwood Co-Ed Meet on Thursday.

The South Winneshiek record books had to be rewritten after Rodney Schwartzhoff’s blazing performance at the Osage Invite. The senior sprinter set the new 100-meter mark at 10.90, breaking the record that was previously held by Colton Hageman (11.04, 2012), Rodney’s cousin.

Schwartzhoff was also part of the first-place 4x100 team (46.38) along with Braxton Smith, Brennan Holthaus, and Levi Lukes.

Paul Hageman (10:45.27) and Derek Dietzenbach (10:59.89) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 3200-meter run to continue the strong evening for the Warriors.

At the end of the day, South Winn finished sixth in the team standings with 60.5 points.

SW girls continue to run strong

The Warrior girls’ track and field team competed in a pair of meets last week as it gears up for the upcoming Upper Iowa Conference Meet this week.

South Winn participated in the Waukon Indian Relays on Tuesday, April 24, and placed seventh with a 38-point effort.

The 4x400 team of Felicity Taylor, Ellie Loesch, Ashley Kriener, and Mary Frana topped the scoring effort for the Warriors as they took first place with a mark of 4:19.72.

Loesch, one of the top sprinters in the state, took runner-up in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.43, finishing behind only Crestwood’s Katie Saner (12.28).

The Warriors were the team to beat Friday in triangular action against MFL/MarMac and Postville at Tri-City Golf Club in Luana. Perfect week for SW girls' golf

It was a solid week for the South Winneshiek girls’ golf team, including senior Jaden Schweinefus, who earned medalist honors in both meets.

The Warrior girls picked up a win over county rival Turkey Valley on Thursday at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club in Ossian. The 204-stroke effort was led by Schweinefus’ round of 40 and runner-up medalist Ali Hoffert’s round of 53.

Additional Warrior scores and Turkey Valley’s team score were unavailable at press time; however, coach Doug Schweinefus confirmed that South Winn was victorious.
