The South Winneshiek football team didn’t care that it was going to battle with the No. 3-ranked team in Class 1A. It wasn’t impressed with the fact that Iowa City Regina had played in the State Championship game in each of the last seven seasons. The Warriors also didn’t care that the Regals had not been beaten on their home field since 2010.
Instead, South Winn was focused on the things it needed to do to advance to the next round of the 2017 Class 1A State Football Playoffs.
Up for the challenge, South Winn and Iowa City Regina exchanged blows throughout much of the first quarter, but neither team took command.
With 2 minutes left in the opening quarter, the high-powered Regal offense struck first with a 28-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, Iowa City Regina again found the end zone as it scored on a 15-yard touchdown pass to grab a 14-0 lead over the Warriors.
Later in the quarter, threatening to go up by another touchdown, the Warrior defense stepped up to the plate and said “not so fast.”
