Both the South Winneshiek boys’ and girls’ cross country teams turned in the best performances of the season Saturday at the biggest meet of the year, the State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge. The efforts were good enough to earn fifth-place finishes for both squads.

“We went into the State Meet knowing we were probably around the fourth-, fifth-, or sixth-best team on both sides,” said coach Kevin Kearney in reference to how he expected the boys’ and girls’ squads to stack up. “Our primary goal was simply to run as well as we were capable and let the chips fall and see if it was good enough to challenge for a top-three spot. We ended up with our best overall team performances on both the boys’ and girls’ side, and we are very proud of the effort of our runners.”

The South Winneshiek football team didn’t care that it was going to battle with the No. 3-ranked team in Class 1A. It wasn’t impressed with the fact that Iowa City Regina had played in the State Championship game in each of the last seven seasons. The Warriors also didn’t care that the Regals had not been beaten on their home field since 2010.

Instead, South Winn was focused on the things it needed to do to advance to the next round of the 2017 Class 1A State Football Playoffs.

Up for the challenge, South Winn and Iowa City Regina exchanged blows throughout much of the first quarter, but neither team took command.

With 2 minutes left in the opening quarter, the high-powered Regal offense struck first with a 28-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead.

Midway through the second quarter, Iowa City Regina again found the end zone as it scored on a 15-yard touchdown pass to grab a 14-0 lead over the Warriors.

Later in the quarter, threatening to go up by another touchdown, the Warrior defense stepped up to the plate and said “not so fast.”

The South Winneshiek volleyball team put on one last show for the Warrior faithful as it hosted its final home action of the 2017 season. However, while the home gym action may be wrapped, the Warrior season is far from it, thanks to a 3-0 shutout over Nashua-Plainfield in Monday night’s Class 2A Region 6 Tournament tilt.

While the final score may not reflect it, the play on the court was competitive all night as South Winn claimed wins, 26-24, 26-24, and 25-18.

Warriors notch 'statement win' over B-K

South Winn running back Rodney Schwartzhoff was able to run around, over, and – when needed – through the Belmond-Klemme defense Friday night as he eclipsed 228 rushing yards on the night. The effort was good enough to move him into the top spot in South Winn’s all-time leading rushing category as the senior is up to 3,629 yards over his career. (Zakary Kriener photo)

The Warriors traveled to Belmond-Klemme Friday night, knowing they would need to be on top of their game with the District 2 runner-up spot and an automatic playoff berth on the line.

South Winn had a rough start to the 2017 football season, going 0-3 in its first three games. Since then, however, the Warriors had put together a string of five straight wins to remain alive in the playoff picture.

With the No. 9-ranked Belmond-Klemme Broncos the only remaining hurdle between the Warriors and a seventh straight postseason appearance, the goal was simple for the squad: win.

The West Central volleyball team’s season came to an end at the hands of North Butler, 3-1, in the Class 1A Region 5 Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Greene.

The Blue Devils came into the matchup 10-20. It is the first time the team’s record has reached double-digit wins since it finished the 2011-2012 season 13-13. The Bearcats, who play in the Top of Iowa Conference, entered the matchup with a 15-16 record.

While on paper, the Bearcats had a decided advantage, especially in height, the Blue Devils came in relaxed, composed, and ready for action.

West Central Blue Devils close out football season

West Central lost its final football game of the season Friday, 59-7, to visiting Kee High. Head coach Steve Milder has been pleased with how well his young players are learning to get into position to make a tackle this season. Here, leading tackler Decker Wirtz (78) puts the squeeze on the ball carrier in recent action as Joe Lamphere (62), Adam Michels (20) and Taylor Hepperle (30) are in perfect position to seal the deal. West Central football closed out the 2017 season with a 59-7 loss to Kee High Friday night in Maynard.

The Kee Hawks opened with a bang, scoring twice in the opening quarter and adding four TDs in the second quarter to lead, 44-0, at the half.

AS in the rest of the season, the Blue Devils did not quit; they were just outmanned.

Lacking much of a ground game (27 yards in nine rushes), the Devils went to the air early and often.

The TigerHawk girls and boys each finished sixth. Only Brynn Gamm made the cut to run at State with her 12th-place finish. Weller Clark was close for the boys, finishing 19th

The 2017 volleyball season is over after NFV lost in the first round of the Class 3A Region 5 playoffs in Oelwein.

The TigerHawks lost to the host Huskies, 14-25, 25-20, 19-25, and 21-25.

NFV head coach Bruce Ehler said, “We just couldn’t get over the hump. We tied the match with a very strong second set, but over the next two sets, whenever we needed a stop or a kill, we just couldn’t finish.

“I was happy that we were very competitive even without playing our best match of the season, which is a very fine line this time of year,” Ehler concluded.
