The West Central Blue Devils softball team ended the regular season with a doubleheader split with the Starmont Stars, 5-15 and 6-5, on Tuesday, June 27, at home. The Blue Devils ended the regular season with an 11-20 record. 

In the 6-5 victory over the Stars, pitcher Mary McDonough battled well and relied on her defense at times to get out of jams.

The TigerHawk baseball team was on a hot streak last week, winning all six games it played. Overall, NFV is on a seven-game win streak.

The streak has been highlighted by good pitching, timely hitting and greatly improved defense.

NFV swept the reigning UIC champion Monday night in New Albin, shutting out Kee twice, 6-0 and 8-0. 

NFV got the only run it needed in the second, but added runs in each of the next four innings in game one.

The swimmers finally opened the home season with a 438-235 win over Monona/Postville on Tuesday, June 27.

North Fayette Valley softball ended the regular season Thursday night in Elkader.

The TigerHawks swept Central, 11-6, in 11 innings and 17-1 in five innings.

Tatum Kahler drove in the first two runs against the Warriors. She singled home Marrah Burrack in the first and plated Burrack, who had five hits in the game, during the third with a sac fly.

The South Winneshiek baseball team wrapped up a solid week Saturday with its fourth win in the last five games, a feat that also saw the Warriors outscore their opponents, 42-17.

The Warriors began the week with an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) doubleheader against the MFL/MarMac Bulldogs.

In game one of the day, South Winn jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning and slowly continued to add to it en route to an 8-0 shutout win.

The Warrior softball team started its week on a positive note last week, but ended with three consecutive losses.

South Winneshiek opened its busy week Monday, June 19, against Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) foe Clayton Ridge.

After the first inning of game one of the doubleheader, the Warriors and Eagles were tied at one run apiece.

From there, the Warrior offense took over as it scored a pair of runs in the second inning, five runs in the fifth inning, and three more runs in the sixth to win 11-1 via the 10-run rule.

Braidyn Buhrow smashed a three-run home run in back-to-back plate appearances against the Oelwein Huskies in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday, June 23. 

The softball doubleheader was the unofficial start to Maynard Days, June 23-25. A rivalry was renewed that evening as Oelwein hadn’t fielded a varsity softball team in three years.

Swimmers win 1st

Swimmers win 1st

 

 

  The West Union swim team won its first meet of the season Tuesday, June 19, in Sumner, 383-316.

Head coach Kennedy Balk said the win was, a total team effort.

As for individual efforts, Balk singled out a few key people who had particularly good efforts. Included were the Lundgren brothers, Jaxson and Brooxton, who were first and second, respectively, in the 8-and-under 25 freestyle.

Carl Moser won the 9/10 100 individual medley, while Maeley Nefzger captured gold in the 11/12 50 fly.

In the 15-18 age groups, Matt Appler and Tiffanie Koch each captured a pair of gold medals after winning the boys’ and girls’ 25 and 50 backstroke.

West Union’s first home meet last Thursday against Cresco was postponed due to weather. It will be made up Tuesday, July 18, in West Union.

The North Fayette Valley softball team started and ended last week by sweeping a UIC foe. 

Monday (June 19), the TigerHawks swept West Central and on Thursday NFV swept Clayton Ridge; both doubleheaders were in West Union.

In the interim, Kee High, the number-one team in Class 1A, took two from NFV on Tuesday, June 20, and Cascade pulled off a sweep on its home diamond on Wednesday.

Although the NFV baseball team went 1-3 in UIC play last week, the TigerHawks kept their third-place conference standing intact.

Clayton Ridge/Central, second in the UIC, beat the TigerHawks twice Monday, June 19, in West Union. The Eagles won, 10-2 and 16-1.
