The Warrior volleyball team saw plenty of action last week, including six tournament matches in Decorah Saturday. At the conclusion of the tournament, South Winn boasted a 11-11 overall record.

Warriors dominate BCLUW

Junior running back Rodney Schwartzhoff got off the bus Friday night in Conrad with a respectable 400 rushing yards for the season. When he and the rest of the Warrior football team boarded the bus to return home, his season rushing total was nearly double that.

Behind a dominating offensive line, Schwartzhoff rushed for a school-record 382 yards on the ground as the Warriors shut out the BCLUW Comets, 38-0.

Blue Devils beat Riceville

As we hit the halfway mark of the volleyball season, the West Central Blue Devils have already tied last season's win total.

The Blue Devils defeated Riceville, 2-0 (25-18, 25-21), on Saturday, Sept. 17, at a tournament in Nashua. Junior Mary McDonough led the charge for West Central with four kills while Braidyn Buhrow, Lauren Fink and Kenzie Squires each had two kills apiece.

WC remains winless after 50-22 loss

It is hard to win football games when you turn the ball over more than the other team.

That held true for the fifth straight game as the West Central Blue Devils fell victim to their own mistakes in a 50-22 loss to Tripoli Friday night, Sept. 23.

XC getting more consistency

“We’re starting to get some consistency,” noted NFV head cross country coach Tracy Nuss after his teams finished their races Tuesday, Sept. 20, in Waukon.

“Next, we have to work at improving the times, but at this point of the season, I’ll take our consistency and ability to race smart,” Nuss explained.

The boys’ varsity placed fourth. Decorah was the easy winner with 17 points; Crestwood was runner-up with 59 points.

SW runners continue to build strength

Last week at Central Elkader, the South Winneshiek cross country program continued to show why both the boys’ and girls’ squads are ranked in the top 10 of Class 2A.

“We had a large majority of athletes run their best, or close to their best, race of the season,” shared co-coach Kevin Kearney. “Our kids did a good job of getting themselves into a good position early in the race, and then, more importantly, we really competed well in the second half of the races.”

Warriors run through Bulldogs

After losing its previous two games to Class 1A No. 7 Denver and Class A No. 1 St. Ansgar, the Warriors dropped below .500 for the first time since week one of 2015. Thanks to a dominating ground attack, South Winn was able to get back on track with a 28-8 win over district foe MFL/MarMac on Friday night.

Trick play keeps West Central winless

The West Central boys’ football team is still in search of its first win of the season after a 50-22 home loss to Central City on Friday, Sept. 16.

The game couldn’t have started much better for the Blue Devils as Colin Kime took the game's first play, a handoff, 53 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Brady Forsyth hit Jake Kuhens in the end zone for the two-point conversion.
