Warriors take out #10 Wapsie

The fourth-ranked South Winn baseball team made it another winning week with a five-game sweep.

The highlight came Friday in a clash against 10^th-ranked Wapsie Valley in Calmar.

SW had a 3-0 lead in the third when WV scored all five of its runs. 

Undaunted the Warriors retaliated with a run in the bottom of the inning and won the game with a two-run fourth. The big blow was Kody Kleve’s two-out double that scored the tying and winning runs.

Warrior gals struggle

The South Winn softball team struggled against some very good opponents last week. 

Thursday, the girls dropped a double header to UIC leading Turkey Valley, 10-3 and 16-2.

Friday, the Warriors moved up to face Class 3A Decorah on the Vikings home diamond. The game was all Decorah as the home team rag up eight runs in the first inning to win, 9-2.

Wednesday’s games against North Fayette Valley were postponed until Thursday, July 9, due to rain.

Blue Devils sweep Pirates

West Central enjoyed a successful home stand Wednesday as it swept Postville 11-1 and 20-19 at Suckow Field in Maynard.

Game one saw the Devils down a run in the first, but rallied to hit the visitors with four in the first and put the game out of reach with seven runs over innings three and four.

 Freshman Abby Squires spun a one-hitter for the W.

Marlee Squires drove in two runs with her two singles. Isabell Eitel also drove in a pair of runs on two hits. 

The nightcap was a real slugfest.

Boys drop three baseball games

It was a tough week for NFV baseball, dropping three games.

Tuesday, the TigerHawks faced South Winn, fourth-ranked in Class 1A. The game in Calmar was never close as the Warriors hit NFV with a four-run first on the way to an 11-0 win.

Kale Rodgers single was the only hit for NFV. Meanwhile, SW battered three TigerHawk pitchers for nine hits and nine earned runs.

Wednesday’s gameagainst MFL/MM was set for West Union but heavy afternoon rains caused the contest to be moved to Monona.

The Bulldogs swept NFV, 15-3 and 4-2.

NFV SB loses to weather and S-F

NFV softball lost the three games it managed to get in last week. Wednesday’s contest against South Winn was rained out and will be played in Calmar on Thursday, July 9.

Last week’s action began Tuesday, June 23 with a twin bill in West Union against Clayton Ridge. The Eagles swept the TigerHawks, 10-5 and 15-12.

Game one was never close as the visitors scored three runs in each of the first three innings.

Warrior softball falls to S-F

In a rare quiet week for the South Winneshiek softball program, the Warriors dropped their only game by a score of 3-1 to Sumner-Fredericksburg.

The game, which was played in Calmar on Thursday, saw the Cougars jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The opposition added another run in the third, before each team added a run in the fifth inning.

Warriors down Vikings, 6-1

South Winn baseball improved to 2-0 on the season as the team picked up a 6-1 win over Decorah on Wednesday evening (June 18).

“This was a great game for our guys to play in with a large crowd and several big-time situations in which we executed extremely well on defense,” said coach Alex Smith after the game. “Decorah did a great job at the plate of putting the ball in play and our guys were up for the challenge, making several great plays while committing zero errors.”

After 2.5 scoreless innings, the Vikings were first to strike on the scoreboard as they were able to score on a sac fly. 

In the top of the fourth inning, the Warriors got revenge as they batted in three runs in a rally that included a two-out RBI triple by Noah Tieskoetter.

TigerHawk softball splits with WC

The TigerHawk softball team split in its road debut of the 2020 summer as West Central beat NFV in game one of the afternoon.

The high-scoring affair resulted in a combined score of 35-20 over the two-game series as the Blue Devils won 12-10 in game one.

North Fayette Valley appeared to be in control for the majority of the contest, leading 6-5 after four innings. In the bottom of the seventh inning, however, the Blue Devils erupted for an insurmountable seven runs to grab a commanding 12-6 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the TigerHawks attempted to get back into it as they scored four runs, but it wasn’t enough.

Trojans stifle TigerHawks in BB action

Playing their third game in two days, the NFV baseball team fell at the hands of the Turkey Valley Trojans on Tuesday afternoon (June 16), 16-5.

“It was not our best effort defensively on Tuesday,“ said coach Dan Hovden, who’s team committed six errors in the game.
